Slow cooked ribs, smoked meat, fresh seafood, and homemade soups are just a few of the delectable dishes at Piggy’s Restaurant in La Crosse, WI. And Piggy’s is two experiences in one: it’s home to both a restaurant and a separate lounge, the Smokin’ Blues. If you’ve never been to Piggys, then put it on your list, because you’re in for a treat!

For more information on Piggy’s Restaurant in La Crosse, WI, and other great local eateries, be sure to check out our complimentary Vacation Guide. It also has tons of info on events, festivals, shopping, and more, so don’t plan your vacation without it!

Piggy’s Restaurant in La Crosse, WI

Piggy’s Restaurant serves up far more variety and quality than a typical BBQ joint. It’s also worth mentioning that they can accommodate many dietary restrictions. Menu items change seasonally to ensure freshness, and they also have a great wine list. So, with the wide number of options available at Piggy’s, there’s something for everyone.

The Restaurant

At Piggy’s Restaurant in La Crosse, WI, they stock the smoker with local hickory and apple wood. The prime rib, pork chops, chicken, pork back ribs and swordfish all come out of that smoker. A brief glance at the menu will reveal delicious appetizers, scallops, lamb chops, and even duck. We recommend the bacon-wrapped shrimp, as well as the pulled pork roast with raspberry chipotle BBQ sauce.

The desserts aren’t the typical BBQ banana pudding. Nope, here you’ll find a chocolate tower cake with white chocolate sauce and fudge, and a white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. The restaurant is only open for dinner starting at 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday and 5:00 Monday – Friday. Consider making reservations as well.

The Smokin’ Blues Lounge

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat lunch in La Crosse, then head over to Piggy’s Smokin’ Blues Lounge. It serves a lunch menu from 11-2, and opens daily for dinner at 4:00. The menu boasts more casual offerings, like burgers, salads, pastas, and soups. We love the roasted potato cheddar soup, the pretzel bites, and the blackened cod BLT. Oh, and definitely the salted caramel pie with Oreo crust.

But the entertainment offerings really set the lounge apart. On Friday nights, comedy shows start at 9:00. Tickets are $8, and reservations are encouraged. Saturdays, the lounge hosts live blues bands starting at 8:00. Their website has a schedule of upcoming performers. You’ll enjoy this unique dining and entertainment experience!

Lounge at Westby House Inn

After a delicious meal and a fun day exploring La Crosse, head home to Westby House Inn, where Victorian comfort and history awaits you. Our comfortable rooms are luxurious with modern conveniences and traditional style. In the morning, our gourmet breakfast wakes you up right, with seasonal treats and fresh, local fare.

Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts sells a wide variety of items, specializing in Scandinavian gifts, gourmet food, and collectibles. No matter who you’re shopping for, you’re likely to find something unique for them here! And best of all, they are just down the block from Westby House Inn!

For more information on Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts and other unique shopping opportunities, be sure to download our complimentary Vacation Guide. You’ll find everything you need to make your trip to the Driftless area an experience you’ll never forget!

Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts

Formerly a hardware store, this corner building was purchased by Dave and Jana Dregne in 1975. Ever since then, they’ve been bringing specialty items and Norwegian merchandise to Westby. This focus on our area’s Norwegian heritage makes their store important to our town’s traditions, and the wonderful items they sell are amazing for all of us!

The Treasures You’ll Find

It wouldn’t be possible to cover all the items at Dregne’s (for that you’ll have to visit their website!), so here’s a few of our favorite things to look for.

  • With the popularity of the new Trolls movie, it might be the perfect time to introduce some real Scandinavian trolls to your life! Trolls are all over Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore, and Dregne’s has trolls for every occasion!
  • Christmas items, particularly the ornaments. Every year, the hardest decision is which ornaments to buy! And these sugar and creamer jugs are gorgeous.
  • Is there anything more traditionally Norwegian than these comfortable and durable clogs? These have truly stood the test of time.
  • Viking collectibles. We celebrate Leif Erikson Day every October, to acknowledge the first organized immigration from Norway in 1825. And while Erikson may or may not have been a Viking, he was likely the first European to try to settle North America! And obviously Vikings play a large role in Scandinavian history!
  • Norwegian foods and treats. After checking out the variety of Scandinavian yummies, you might find yourself a new favorite snack!

And while lots of things are available from their online catalog (which our guests all appreciate!) there’s nothing like going in for the personal experience of Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts! You might even get to meet the owners or one of their kids. We guarantee you won’t regret the trip!

Book Your Stay at Westby House Inn

When you’ve wandered through Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts, maybe had a bite to eat at Borgen’s Cafe, we hope you’ll keep on walking down to Westby House Inn. We are centrally located to lots of unique shopping in Westby, and a short drive from La Crosse as well. The peaceful luxury of our Victorian inn is sure to be just what your vacation needs!

Our rooms are well appointed, with your comfort in mind. If a fireplace and a whirlpool tub sounds like the perfect way to end a winter night, check out our Atrium and Victorianne rooms. From cozy to spacious, we have the room to fit your needs.

And in the morning, start your day right by treating yourself to our full gourmet breakfast. These homemade dishes are what keep many of our guests returning time after time!

And while you’re planning your trip to Westby, don’t forget to download our complimentary Vacation Guide. We look forward to seeing you soon!

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse is a beautiful destination. Visitors to the lovely wooded area find lots of opportunities for peace and reflection. Whether or not you’re religious, the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a place worth visiting.

Be sure to check out our complimentary Vacation Guide for more information about the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe as well as other Driftless events and activities. You’ll find everything you need to know to plan the perfect vacation to our area!

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe was the dream of Bishop Raymond L. Burke. Most of the 100-acres was donated, and the ground breaking began in 2001. Now, the peaceful walking trails, gorgeous church architecture, art, and cafe make this a popular destination for pilgrimages of all kinds. So let’s take a look at the three best reasons to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

1. The Shrine Church Art and Architecture

Built high on a hill, the Shrine’s campanile and dome are visible from miles away. The Shrine was designed in a classical Italian style. Stained glass windows in the ceiling let in beautiful light. Naves frame the Shrine on both aisles leading up to the marble alter. A mosaic of Our Lady of Guadalupe hangs behind the alter. Paintings of saints and other church fathers hang in the Shrine, and many sculptures are featured as well.

2. Walking Trails and Devotional Areas

The 100 acres of property that surround the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe give it a sense of peace and tranquility. Walking from the parking lot/Pilgrim Center to the Church is approximately half a mile. A shuttle service is available for those who can’t walk that distance. The Meditation Trail is one mile, round trip, and has many benches for resting and reflection.

Many also enjoy the Votive Candle Chapel, from the warm glow of the candles to the colorful stained glass windows and porcelain tiles.

You’ll also find many devotional areas, as well as the opportunity to walk through the stations of the cross and a rosary walk. You don’t have to be religious to soak in the quiet and natural beauty! A map with Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe hours is available on the website.

3. Cafe and Gift Shop

Take a moment to explore the Culina Mariana Cafe, as well as the gift shop. The cafe serves both breakfast and lunch. You can see their hours here. The gift shop is full of unique and special gifts to serve as a reminder of your trip or to purchase for someone special. You can preview some of their offerings online.

Make Westby House a Part of Your Pilgrimage

The Westby House Inn is waiting for you just a short drive from the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our lovely rooms are full of modern luxuries and amenities, without sacrificing comfort. Mount La Crosse boasts one of Wisconsin’s longest ski runs, as well as one of the steepest trails. This excellent ski area is one of the best places to ski in the state, and it’s less than 30 minutes from Westby!

For more information about Mount La Crosse and local skiing, be sure to check out our complimentary Vacation Guide. It’s full of everything you’ll need to know when traveling to the Driftless area of Wisconsin.

Mount La Crosse

Mount La Crosse is a perfect option for families, couples, or single skiers. The location, chalet, and trails make sure there’s a little something here for everyone. So let’s take a look at six reasons Mount La Crosse is one of the best places to go skiing.

1. Variety of Trails

The Mountaintop chair takes you to (you guessed it!) the mountain top. From here, you can access the Mileway run, a long, gentle green back to the base. Damnation, a double black diamond is at the top of the hill as well. You’ll also find a good number of challenging-but-fun blues, as well as three black diamonds. For the little ones and the learners, there’s a bunny hill with a pull-chair as well. The rest of the runs are accessed via the three chair lifts. Check out their website for a Mt. La Crosse trail map.

2. Mt. La Crosse Terrain Park

For the daredevils in your group, Mount La Crosse also maintains two terrain parks. “Call it Quits” has lots of fun tricks: small jumps, rails, boxes, and wall rides. The other terrain park has long jumps between 10-30 feet.

3. Great for Families

Because Mount La Crosse has a variety of ski runs, there’s something for everyone in your family! If your littles (or you!) don’t know how to ski, they also offer lessons. Ages five and under are free with an adult lift ticket. And watch the Mt. La Crosse Facebook page to see when it’s family night — discounted lift tickets and ski rentals after 4 p.m.

4. Mount La Crosse Cozy Chalet

This unmistakable A-frame chalet offers a great view of the slopes. And everyone loves kicking back at the St. Bernard room, located above the ticket counter. They have food, drinks, and even Happy Hour Specials.

5. Excellent Pricing

If you’re used to paying hundreds to ski in the Rockies, Mount La Crosse will be a breath of fresh air! In addition to the regular lift tickets, they also have discounted tickets for half-days and night skiing. Their Facebook page is a great way to stay on top of other specials and discounts!

6. Reclaim the Ski Vacation

If you make a trip out to a Colorado resort, you often feel like you have to spend every free moment skiing to get your money’s worth. For recreational skiers, this can result in extreme soreness, injury, or just not enjoying a vacation. But at Mount La Crosse, you don’t have to choose: it’s feasible to do the whole mountain in a day, so it can be just one piece of an exciting Driftless vacation. Or, your vacation can be all about skiing, as well!

Make Westby House Your Base

Whether you’ve skied one day or five, we welcome you back to Westby House Inn. Our luxurious rooms will be just what you need after a cold day on the hill. Maybe choose a room with a whirlpool tub and fireplace to warm your bones! And a gourmet breakfast in the morning will fuel you up for skiing or whatever activities that lie ahead. We know you’ll find more things you love here in the Driftless area, so be sure to download our complimentary Vacation Guide. We’ll see you on the slopes!

The Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI – The Food

The title of this blog promised to tell you the best item on the menu at Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI. There’s just one problem – it turns out, we can’t pick just one thing! Because first, we’d have to know: are you wanting breakfast food or lunch/dinner? (They have all three.) Sweet or savory? Starving or just a little hungry? There are too many categories to pick a favorite item! But if you’re ready to turn on some serious cravings, read on!

Our Top Picks for Breakfast

The hardest question of breakfast is always savory or sweet. At Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI, it might be best to split with a friend so you don’t have to decide! We love their Green Eggs and Ham (a twist on eggs benedict) and the “Big Philly Omelet.” On the sweeter side, they coat their toast with a sugary cereal, and the result is pretty delicious. The waffles are excellent as well. View their breakfast menu for yourself and see which is your favorite!

Salads, Sandwiches and More for Lunch

But, of course, you might already be full from the gourmet breakfast at Westby House. So maybe holding off until lunch will work for you! You’ll have plenty to choose from! Cheesey Bacon Jalapeño Bombs or White Cheddar Cheese Curds make a great appetizer. (This is Wisconsin…anything with cheese is excellent!) Then there’s burgers, sandwiches, and salads. We recommend the Spring Chicken Sandwich, as well as the Sweet Summer Salad.

Delicious Dinner Specials

Some of the lunchtime favorites are featured on the Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI, dinner menu, but you’ll also want to check out the daily special! For dinner appetizers, you absolutely have to try the Vietnamese Pork Tacos. Slow cooked pork is topped with house made pickled vegetables, pepper aioli, and cilantro – delicious! The Hot Belly Burger (if you like spicy) and the Korean Burger are both unique and tasty. We’re also partial to the Aloha Jerk Chicken and the Garlic Butter Steak.

The Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI – The Atmosphere

The first floor of the Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI, has two dining rooms that can seat approximately 150 people. The atmosphere is casual, and 11 TVs mean that lots of people come here to watch sporting events. The Moonlit Lounge is the basement-level bar and a great place to relax on couches and comfy chairs. The outdoor patio is great for enjoying the nice weather! All in all, the Blue Moon in Onalaska, WI, gives you a unique opportunity to enjoy excellent dining in a family-owned piece of local history. Fly fishing in Wisconsin

Wisconsin is home to many creeks, streams, and rivers. With so many bodies of water to choose from, a fishing excursion during your visit is almost inevitable. Whether you’re an experienced fisherman or have hardly touched a fishing pole in your life, you’ll find fly fishing in Wisconsin to be a fun and memorable experience. To help get you started, here are just a few of our personal favorite fishing spots near our Wisconsin bed and breakfast.

For even more fly fishing in Wisconsin opportunities or other local activities, take a look at our Free Driftless Area Travel Guide right now!

Top 5 Spots for Fly Fishing in Wisconsin

  1. Castle Rock Creek
While this stream may be known for its fertile fishing, it is one of the most challenging fishing spots in the entire state. Often green in color, this creek is flows deep and slow and has a lot of weed growth which supports a lot of insects and crustaceans. The Castle Rock Spring makes sure that the water at this creek is always cold and clean. While this is a favorite fly fishing spot, it supports a lot of fish and your average angler doesn’t have to walk too far to find their next catch.
  2. Timber Coulee
The recipient of about $500,000 of stream improvements, the Timber Coulee is the perfect place to fly fish. This stream has an artificial look to it as it runs narrow and swiftly through cow pastures. You won’t find a lot of large fish in this stream, but the smaller fish are plentiful. If you’re looking for some solitude, head to some of the older sections of the Timber Coulee to get away from the crowds.
  3. Black Earth Creek
If you’re seeking trout fishing, this is the creek for you. Located extremely close to Madison, WI, this is considered a gem of a trout stream. After a few years of fish kills from run off of farmers fields and siltation problems, this creek is still improving. Even with the issues in the past years, this stream is rarely empty. While you won’t find a plethora of solitude here, you are nearly guaranteed to get a catch.
  4. West Fork of the Kickapoo River
As one of the most well cared for streams in the area, this was once the best stream in the state and has plans to regain that title. The West Fork Sportsman’s Club have put in a lot of effort and money to improve this stream. While dry dams and small flowages are still a problem, there is still fishing available. Locals ask that the stream’s visitors do their best to refrain from stressing the fish any more than they need to be. With a healthy population of naturally reproducing fish and the supplemented stocking of “wild” fish, this stream will be back to it’s former glory in no time.
  5. Big Green River
At the top of this river it runs narrow and flows mostly through pastures, but as it reaches the Wisconsin River it becomes wider and deeper. This river is easily accessed by the roads which run in the river valley. While the catch and release section of the river is usually fairly busy, there are other parts of the river you can seek out to find solitude. The Big Green River has been self-sustaining since the smaller streams around it were planted with wild fish.

After a day fishing the great streams, creeks, and rivers of Southwestern Wisconsin, come back to Westby, WI, to relax. Take advantage of the best bed and breakfast the Driftless Area has to offer at Westby House Inn. For more information on things to do in Westby, WI, make sure to request our free Driftless Area Vacation Guide. Something very special happens in Westby early in February: the Ski Jumping Tournament at Snowflake Ski Club! This event is one-of-a-kind, and is a huge tradition around here. (That’s what happens when an event is almost 100 years old!) The Friday and Saturday of Ski Jumping Tournament weekend are packed with fun and community. If you go once, you’ll want to go again!

For more information on the Snowflake Ski Club and other local attractions, be sure to download our complimentary Vacation Guide. You’ll find everything you need to know about Driftless area restaurants, festivals, shopping, and more!

The Snowflake Ski Club Ski Jumping Tournament

The all-volunteer Westby Ski Club held its first ski jumping tournament in 1923. Various hills and smaller jumps were used in the tournaments until 1961, when the current Olympic-length hill was finished. For warm weather fun, the 9-hole Snowflake Golf Course opened at the base of the jumps in 1989. (Read more about the Snowflake Golf Course on our blog!) But with winter approaching, here’s four reasons you can’t miss the Snowflake Ski Club Ski Jumping Tournament:

1. The Extreme Sport of Ski Jumping

It’s almost hard to describe how incredible it is to see someone flying 50 miles-per-hour from several stories high. The 118-meter ski jump is huge in person. You can watch the competition from the bottom, or from several vantage points higher up. Either way, you’ll be thrilled and terrified each time a jumper takes off. For some incredible photos that give you a better sense of scale, check out the Snowflake Ski Club Facebook page.

2. See Potential Olympic Athletes Compete

This isn’t just a local competition. The ski jump competitors come to the Snowflake Ski Club from all over the United States, as well as all over the world! From as close as Minneapolis to as far away as Norway, Finland, Austria, Japan, and Slovania, the jumpers are all here to win! Their talent and fearlessness is extraordinary! Some may even end up competing in the Winter Olympics.

3. Big Winter Party

The whole event usually turns into a bit of a huge tailgate party. People crowd around a massive bonfire, sipping hot chocolate. There’s local food and drink vendors there, as well as live music. Horse-drawn carriage sleigh rides and helicopter rides make it over-the-top special. Basically, just dress warmly and get ready to make some new friends at this community-style party.

4. Close to Westby House

For Snowflake Ski Club Ski Jump attendees, there’s not a better place to stay than Westby House Inn! We’re just five miles from the jump site, so you won’t waste time traveling. We’ll fuel you up for a day at the jumps with our full, gourmet breakfast. And after all that excitement, you’ll need a cozy, warm place to sleep. We’ve got that covered, too! Our luxurious rooms are the perfect place to snuggle in for a good night’s sleep. Check out our complimentary Vacation Guide for more fun winter activities near the Westby House Inn. The snow and hot chocolate are waiting for you!

Indoor Ice Skating in Wisconsin

Indoor ice skating rinks are popular in part because of their availability and ease of use. You don’t have to clear snow from the pond or check the depth of the ice; you just lace up your skates and go! Here’s some great local places to go ice skating in Wisconsin:

Viroqua Community Arena in Viroqua– This NHL-sized rink is home to ice hockey games and skating lessons (some of them free). Call ahead to find out when is the best time for recreational skating.

Green Island Ice Arena in La Crosse – This arena houses several ice hockey, figure skating, and curling programs. Their open skate times and prices are listed on their website. Also check out the annual Winter Rec Fest!

Onalaska Omni Center – With two banquet rooms and two arenas, there’s always something going on! Call ahead for open skate hours, or check the online schedule. There’s also an outdoor rink (mentioned below).

Outdoor Ice Skating in Wisconsin

For outdoor ice skating in Wisconsin, you have two options: an outdoor rink that is maintained, or a frozen lake/pond.

Park Bowl Park in Viroqua has a wonderful outdoor recreation ice skating rink as well as an ice hockey rink in the winter months. There’s also a sledding hill and a warming shelter nearby.

Onalaska Omni Center – This outdoor rink at the Omni is open any time it’s light out, and you can event rent skates inside the center. Plus, it’s free!

Of course, many people enjoy heading out to a frozen lake for ice skating enjoyment. And with plenty of lakes around Westby, this is definitely an option. The lakes begin to freeze around Thanksgiving and are ready for ice skating and ice fishing in December or January. Remember: any time you’re skating on a frozen lake or river, it’s important to follow safety guidelines. Even if others are already out, do your own safety checks in multiple areas. And always go with a friend!

Ice fishing in Wisconsin is just part of the year-round sport of Wisconsin fishing. As we say, “The best time to fish is whenever you can!” Ice fishing actually makes up a quarter of the annual catch in Wisconsin. The great Mississippi River and its backwaters, plus other lakes and rivers nearby, mean lots of opportunities for ice fishing.

For more information on fishing and other exciting things to do in our area, be sure to download our complimentary Vacation Guide. It’s packed with just about everything you need to know in order to plan your Driftless Wisconsin vacation.

Ice Fishing in Wisconsin on the Mississippi River

While you can go ice fishing in Wisconsin right on the Mississippi River, the backwaters of the Mississippi River offer fantastic opportunities as well. The best ice fishing will invariably be on the backwaters with little to no current. And you’ll always find an abundance of panfish, as well as walleye, bass, and northern pike. Nearby lakes, some manmade or fed by other rivers, are great ice fishing spots as well.

If you don’t feel quite ready to tackle ice fishing on your own, consider taking a guided trip or an ice fishing charter. They will know all the best spots, and might even have access to private lands. But any bait shop you decide to visit should have good info on where the fish are biting.
