1. Go for a Bike Ride
The La Crosse River State Trail, 22 miles of packed limestone, takes you through the La Crosse River Valley. Initially an abandoned railroad route, it now parallels an active rail line. The trail connects to the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail in Sparta as well. Popular with bicyclists and walkers in the warmer months, it’s open to snowmobiles in the winter months.
2. Play a Round of Golf
The River Run Golf Course in Sparta was recognized by USA Today as one of the best courses under $50. This beautiful 18-hole course has also been given a three-star rating by Golf Digest. If you didn’t bring your clubs, their pro shop offers rentals of clubs, pull carts, and golf carts. The on-site restaurant, the Greens, has great lunch specials and a full-service bar. You can also check out our blog for more golf courses in the area, as well as our blog about the Snowflake Golf Course.
3. Visit a Bike Museum
Called the “Bike Capital of the World,” Sparta seems the ideal place to host a bike museum. And the Deke Slayton Memorial Space & Bicycle Museum showcases more than 200 bike exhibits, from the earliest bikes to the Wright Brothers Bike Shop. Deke Slayton, an astronaut from Sparta, put his personal spacesuit, a moon rock, and other items on display. The museum also houses early airplanes, a kids’ area, and a gift shop.
4. Explore Antique Stores
Antique shopping is a fascinating way to pass the time, and you’ll enjoy the trove of treasures at Sparta’s New and Used Shop or Janusheske Antiques in Sparta. Our blog also covers other local shops for more antique treasure hunting. In nearby Cashton, Down a Country Road features six shops with wares from local Amish artisans.
5. Eat and Drink
Ginny’s Cupboard on Water Street is a beautiful old-fashioned soda shop. The soda shop machine still runs, and you can also order an espresso, chai, or anything else. Locals love the soups, sandwiches, and desserts. And if you like generous portions of delicious food and great prices, the Sparta Family Restaurant won’t disappoint!
