How to Go Skijoring

Skijoring is a winter sport where a person on skis is pulled by a dog, horse, or motor vehicle. The name comes from a Norwegian word that means “ski driving.” Dogs are typically chosen as the companion of choice for skijoring in Wisconsin, and the sport has gained popularity in recent years. Now, there are even skijoring competitions throughout the state! You can choose one dog or an entire team to pull you along. It’s a great way for you and your four-legged athlete to get exercise while having fun in the snow.

Where to Go Skijoring in Wisconsin

There are many skijoring trails in the area, but one of our favorites is the Elroy-Sparta State Trail. Considered the first rails-to-trails conversion in the country, it’s also one of the most scenic destinations in the entire state. When you set out on this 32-mile route, you may run into one of the historic railroad tunnels along the way. The tunnels close during the winter months, but don’t fret! There are well-marked paths to get around them. Because the ground is so flat (less than a 3% grade), it’s the perfect place to go skijoring!

Do you want to take the road less traveled? Strap on your skis, grab your dog, and forge your own path through the snowy landscape! There are many areas open to public use that are great for skijoring! You can go on non-designated cross-country ski trails or make your own trail. Make sure that the property is dog-friendly before you go exploring!
