Challenge Yourself at the La Crosse Omnium

The Ultimate Cycling Event

The La Crosse Omnium is an annual cycling competition happening in May. This three-day race gathers devoted athletes and motivated individuals who wish to push their limits and set new standards. The Omnium has three different stages:

Friday: Time Trial

The first part of the La Crosse Omnium is the Time Trial, which launches the competition. This first challenge is a short 2.4-mile race that takes place at Grandad Bluff Park. Even though it is short, it has some high elevations (554 ft) and tough ascents. Get your lungs ready and book yourself a good leg massage afterwards because you’re in for an intense ride.

Saturday: The Road Race

The Road Race is longer and consists of a 13.6-mile loop of pavement. The main feature of this race is a long and fast ascent. If you can make it to the top, you’ve already accomplished a lot of the work. The trick is to get yourself in the right pace from the start. Don’t get caught wasting all your energy too soon or you will not make it to the finish line.

Sunday: The Criterium

The final race is the Criterium, which takes cyclists on a circuit to the shores of the Mississippi river and through downtown La Crosse. Since it is a flat course, you won’t struggle as much as the previous days. Try and stay at the front so you don’t get stuck in the middle of the other competitors, as breaks to escape will be rare.

A Fun Way to Spend the Weekend

Even if you don’t participate in the La Crosse Omnium, you can still enjoy the event and have a great weekend. The race is part of a bigger fitness festival and you easily encounter runners, families, and spectators all around town. Relax for the day and watch the other races. You can also try some of the best downtown restaurants and breweries, and there’s always the Pearl Ice Cream Parlor for those with a sweet tooth!
