Spend a Day Exploring French Island, WI

Parks and Beaches

French Island is bordered on the west by the Mississippi River and Lake Onalaska. It’s located east of the La Crosse River. The area’s name is a testimony to the numerous French settlers who arrived in La Crosse in 1849, including the very first one, Xavier Goyette. Before the 1800’s, the island was a hunting and fishing ground for the surrounding Native American tribes and is still a popular spot for fishermen and hunters to this day.

French Island is five miles long and one mile wide. If you want to relax and explore the surrounding nature, go for a walk and catch some sun at Black River Beach. It’s a fabulous place for the entire family. And for fishing addicts, it’s considered one of the best places in town! If you are visiting during the summer, bring a towel or chair and enjoy a water ski show with your family. They’re held every week at Airport Beach in French Island from mid-June to mid-august.
