Sparta Butterfest History
In the early ’80s, this festival got its start as a celebration for the city’s bi-centennial. The name “Butterfest” evolved from Sparta’s notoriety for the award-winning butter makers from the local milk plant. The “Miss Sparta Pageant” began a couple of years later, and is currently a part of the Miss America organization as a festival pageant.
Over the years, the festival has grown and expanded to a three-day event that brings in significant revenue for the community. And now, it’s a large, fun, weekend the whole family can enjoy!
A wide array of events packs the Sparta Butterfest weekend full of fun! Here are a few of our can’t-miss favorites!
The Sunday Butterfest Parade is a parade done right. With music, floats, dance teams, horses, old cars, and more, you can’t go wrong.
Is there anything better than a great deal on a gorgeous day? The Sparta Butterfest Arts and Crafts Fleamarket is a treasure trove of items from lots of vendors.
The carnival is a classic…would it even be a real festival without one? The carnival offers lots of different rides so that kids of all ages can enjoy. And don’t forget about Wristband Day (Sunday), where a wristband purchase gets you unlimited rides from 12-4.
4. Miss Sparta Pageant
This preliminary pageant for the Miss America Pageant offers scholarships and prizes for the winner. There’s always great talent to be found! Younger girls also enjoy competing in the Teen or Jr. Miss pageants.
5. Too Many Events to Name!
Truly, we know you’ll enjoy the activities offered at Sparta Butterfest! Where else can you compete in a Cornhole Beanbag Tournament or a Milking Contest? And if you like sports, there’s the Softball Tournament, the Golf Tournament, and the Sparta 5k run/2m walk. You can even compete in a Poker contest.
