Indoor Ice Skating in Wisconsin

Indoor ice skating rinks are popular in part because of their availability and ease of use. You don’t have to clear snow from the pond or check the depth of the ice; you just lace up your skates and go! Here’s some great local places to go ice skating in Wisconsin:

Viroqua Community Arena in Viroqua– This NHL-sized rink is home to ice hockey games and skating lessons (some of them free). Call ahead to find out when is the best time for recreational skating.

Green Island Ice Arena in La Crosse – This arena houses several ice hockey, figure skating, and curling programs. Their open skate times and prices are listed on their website. Also check out the annual Winter Rec Fest!

Onalaska Omni Center – With two banquet rooms and two arenas, there’s always something going on! Call ahead for open skate hours, or check the online schedule. There’s also an outdoor rink (mentioned below).

Outdoor Ice Skating in Wisconsin

For outdoor ice skating in Wisconsin, you have two options: an outdoor rink that is maintained, or a frozen lake/pond.

Park Bowl Park in Viroqua has a wonderful outdoor recreation ice skating rink as well as an ice hockey rink in the winter months. There’s also a sledding hill and a warming shelter nearby.

Onalaska Omni Center – This outdoor rink at the Omni is open any time it’s light out, and you can event rent skates inside the center. Plus, it’s free!

Of course, many people enjoy heading out to a frozen lake for ice skating enjoyment. And with plenty of lakes around Westby, this is definitely an option. The lakes begin to freeze around Thanksgiving and are ready for ice skating and ice fishing in December or January. Remember: any time you’re skating on a frozen lake or river, it’s important to follow safety guidelines. Even if others are already out, do your own safety checks in multiple areas. And always go with a friend!
