5 of the Most Unique Things at the Vernon County Fair

Looking ahead to fall means it’s time to start thinking about the Vernon County Fair, held every September in Viroqua, Wisconsin!

Vernon County Fair – a Time-Honored Tradition

One of the oldest county fairs in the state, with its beginning going all the way back to 1856, the Vernon County Fair now attracts approximately 6,000 exhibitors and 25,000 spectators. Over the years, the fair has had many unique events, such as horse-racing and contests for the largest and smallest shoe sizes. Here’s a few fun events that you won’t find just anywhere:

1. Harness Racing

Have you ever seen this sort of horse racing? The horses run at a certain pace while pulling a small two-wheeled buggy behind them, called a bike or a sulky, which is carrying the driver. It’s very exciting, and horse racing has always had an important role to play in the success of the Vernon County Fair!

2. Little Britches Dairy Show

Time for the little folks to strut their stuff and show off their little calves! Great practice for future years of showings, this event is also adorable in every way (from their faces, to the calves, to the answers they give the “judges”).

3. Antiques and Farm Tractor Pull

This motor sport competition is popular in many areas of the country, but you’ve probably never seen any antique farm equipment working this hard! It’s a race to see which tractor can pull their weighted sled the fastest. Come cheer on your favorite tractor!

4. Demolition Derby

Always a crowd pleaser, this demolition derby (different types of cars ramming into each other until only one is left standing) also has a great safety record! With several different classes of cars to choose from, pick your favorite contest, or watch them all!

5. Cricket Spitting Contest

This little contest is exactly what it sounds like: put a (dead) cricket in your mouth, and spit that thing as far as you can! (Maybe have a friend standing nearby, ready to hand you a fresh apple cider!)

So while uniqueness still abounds at the Vernon County Fair, all your fair-time favorites are there too: rides, contests, concerts, farm animals, art, handmade items, fireworks, and especially the food! All sorts of pies, brats, burgers, baked potatoes, cinnamon rolls, funnel cakes, and the fried ones, of course: deep fried jalapeno poppers and deep fried broccoli and cheese bites sounds delicious!
