Why Are We One of the Top Places to Visit in Wisconsin?

places to visit in wisconsin

Across the state of Wisconsin, you’ll find everything from the home of one of professional football’s most storied teams, to farmland responsible for helping drive the nation’s dairy industry. The eastern border of the state is consumed by Lake Michigan, and the waters of Lake Superior occupy Wisconsin’s northern shores, affording residents the luxury of beaches, fishing and sailing. Located in the western part of the Badger State, the Town of Westby compliments larger cities like Milwaukee and Green Bay with classic Midwestern charm. If you keep reading, you’ll find out why Westby is one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin!

Founded over 150 years ago by Norwegian immigrants, Westby is a quaint, welcoming town in western Wisconsin. Not far from the border of Minnesota, Westby’s location ideal for those who prefer small town atmosphere to the hustle and bustle of city life. However, if a trip to city is on the agenda, Madison (the state’s second largest city) can be reached in just about two hours, and La Crosse is under 30 miles west.

But what makes our town so special? For starters, it’s our culture, which pays honor to our town’s history. Norwegian culture is important to us, and Westby’s businesses reflect our heritage. Take Nordic Creamery, for example. According to the creamery’s website, the family business run is by award winning cheesemaker Al Bekkum, and proudly serves quality Wisconsin cheese and butter, courtesy of the Bekkum’s. The family’s lines can be traced directly back to Norway, and you can learn more about their history and products here. Dregne’s Scandinavian Gifts is another one of Westby’s unique shops, where you can purchase Norwegian gifts (including trolls!), jewelry, clothing and food.

However, the best display of our town’s Norwegian pride is the annual Syttende Mai Norwegian Festival. Entering its 48th year, the festival is a celebration of the food, music, games and history of Westby’s settlers. Syttende Mai is a weekend-long festival, featuring everything from authentic Norwegian meals, crafts and clothing, to a half-marathon race and the Rommegrot Eating Festival. There’s too much to list here – you can get all the details of this Westby staple at the festival’s website. We’d love for you to celebrate with us, and we’re sure you’ll see why Westby is one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin!

Another popular Westby event is the Snowflake Ski Jumping Tournament. Hosted by the Snowflake Ski Club, the annual event attracts crowds that witness professional skiers take on the Snowflake Ski Jumping Complex, including an Olympic-sized jump! The club’s Facebook page has some great photos and videos from 2016’s competition, and results, facility details and more can be found at snowflakeskiclub.com.

If you visit our town, the Westby House Inn and Restaurant would love to host you. Whether you’re here for Syttende Mai or simply to experience small town Wisconsin at its finest, we have the lodging and dining that will make your stay unforgettable. For example, wake up in the second-floor Tower Room, and fill up on a delicious gourmet breakfast to start your day, or stay in the Guest Lodge’s rustic Scandia Room and enjoy a free continental morning meal. Enjoy lunch and tea at our Restaurant and Tearoom. In addition, we offer some great specials, especially for couples planning a romantic getaway. We think that of all the places to visit in Wisconsin, Westby is one of the best. Stay with us, and you’ll see why.
