Trempealeau Wisconsin Hip Breaker Bike Tour near La Crosse

Northwest of La Crosse and Westby Wisconsin the 17th Annual Trempealeau Hip Breaker Bike Tour will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2010. The ride features a 10 mile fun ride along with 23 and 43 mile tours. All routes go through beautiful Perrot State Park and on to the low-traffic roads of Trempealeau County.  Sage service service is provided. Rest stops include beverages, fruit, and snacks.  The 43 mile route includes the infamous ‘Hipbreaker Hill’.  Make it up this one and win lifetime bragging rights!  Register by calling 608-534-6780 or visit www.trempealeau.net. Earth Day Celebration and Clean-up Scheduled at Kickapoo Reserve near Westby, Wisconsin

Nature Hike at Reserve

Celebrate Earth Day, April 17, 2010, with a walk amongst nature.  Tour the Kickapoo Reserve’s natural sights and sounds.  The Reserve is located 25 minutes from the Westby House B&B.  Weather and wildlife permitting participants will listen for frogs, cranes, and woodcocks and search out spring ephemerals.  Dress for the weather. Nature Hike is 9:00 am -11:00 am.     Pre-registration- 608-625-2960

Annual Clean-up: 12;00 pm – 4:30 pm  -April 17, 2010 at Reserve. Volunteers are asked to pick up roadway litter in the area. Stop at the Visitor Center for supplies and a commemorative gift. Advance sign-up is required.

Trout Fishing – Early Catch and Release Season Opens on Wisconsin’ s Driftless Area Streams

With Valentine’s reminding us that February is half over, it is also the time  that a Fly-fisherman’s heart turns to the Early Catch and Release Season in  Southwest Wisconsin.  Avid anglers will muster to the Driftless Area to cast in the season on Saturday, March 6, 2010.    The Westby Wisconsin area alone has over 200 miles of Class A trout streams and all within a short drive of the Westby House Bed & Breakfast.  The large snow totals received so far this winter will be great for future waters in the streams and creeks. The Driftless Angler Fly Shop in Viroqua will open on March 1st.  Now is the time to Think Spring!

New Cross Country Ski Trail Now Open in Westby

The owner of Mt. Boriah Designs, a bicycle apparel manufacturer,  and the Snowflake Ski Club has brought cross country skiing to the Snowflake Ski Club of Westby Wisconsin.  The one-kilometer man-made track runs through the golf course  of  Timber Coulee, which is  just 5 miles from the Westby House Bed and Breakfast.  Chris Jackson started the Snowflake Nordic Ski Club  by creating a program for youngsters of the community.  Registration day flourished with an unpredictable  forty kids for the classes.  The trail is open to the public, and you need to provide your own equipment.  Cross country skiing is fun and easy to learn.

Fall foliage reports for Southwest Wisconsin can be watched on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism web site, www.travelwisconsin.com.  Check the report and plan your Fall getaway to include the Westby House  B&B in Westby. Peak colors in the Southwest have a good chance of being viewed the first two weekends in October.  Many area festivals and events occur in these two weekends including Octoberfest in La Crosse.

Vernon Vineyards Winery is on the Great River Road Wine Trail that is located just 7 miles South of Viroqua and the Westby House B&B and a short scenic drive  from La Crosse Wisconsin.  The winery, and nine others will present its Grand Opening, a Mid-Summer Festival on Saturday and Sunday, June 20th  and 21st from 11 am – 6 pm.  The nine wineries on the trail will each present their special offerings with free samples available to the general public. Some wine trail members will also have special food items available for purchase at the event. In addition to enjoying the wines and activities at each winery, guests can also enjoy the celebrations occurring in the various villages and towns along the trail.
The Great River Road Wine Trail offers a passport program that allows guests to earn a wine glass once they have visited and received stamps from each of the wineries. No purchase is necessary, and completed passports may be turned in at any time. Web site is  greatriverroadwinetrails.org
