Free Biking on Elroy Sparta Bike Trail in Wisconsin

Tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta Trail

Tunnels on the Elroy-Sparta Trail

Free riding on the Wisconsin State Bike Trails is set for June 6 and 7, 2009. Close to the Westby House B&B is the Elroy Sparta Bike Trail.
Bike the trail and go through Tunnel #3, which is nearly a mile long, and just 8 miles from Sparta is the longest bike trail tunnel in America! These tunnels were cut through the rolling hills of Wisconsin in the late 1800’s. Only an 8-mile bike ride from Sparta, it’s an experience you shouldn’t miss. (The trail has a very slight grade of less than 3%–not making it difficult to ride to the tunnel, but making it much easier to ride back to Sparta!)

best of both worlds. Take a pedal to the Great River or La Crosse River State Bike Trails to enjoy some of the best scenery in this Driftless Area of Wisconsin. The Great River Trail is 24 miles along the Mississippi River. The trail travels 18 different waterways with a trip across a former railroad trestle that is 287-feet over the Black River. Start this trip in Trempealeau or Onalaska. The winding 21.5 mile La Crosse River Trail takes you from Onalaska to Sparta. It runs over trout streams, through farm country and you may find yourself pedaling along a train on the active railroad line. Both of these trails are smooth surface for road bikes and mountain. Trail passes are $10 per day or an annual pass of $20. Rejuvenate with a stay in one of the Jacuzzi Suites at the Westby House!
